The creature part of our thoughts requires this as obvious proof that our technique is a good one. The subconscious bottom line we sketch is that our little part on the planet is secure, and that we’ve got this thing sent.

The glassy aquamarine waters turned a churning brown and we were forced to move back from the stream bed. Monsoon rains in the Grand Canyon are nothing to mess around with.

Laurence, Last summer I read Deep Survival, great book. I also read Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by A. Dillard. Can you suggest something for this summer, your personal favorites.
Thanks

Laurence,

Great item - I hadn't ever know the facts of the hwy .

I love the southest , I travel there often and know the 87 well . I used to pro fish in that area - Love to skip over to the ocean for the saltwater fishing.

I found being prepared and not being OCC about it has saved me on a couple trips, never hurt to have my AAA card with me .

Keep it up .. Brings back great times.

Laurence,

So much of what you write about can pertain to surviving the vicissitudes of life in general.

“Perhaps instead of taking all the rewards I’m handed every day as evidence that I’m always on the right track, I should be examining my strategies a bit more carefully.”

I agree that too many of us place excessive importance on these ‘rewards’. But as well as giving us a false sense of security in potentially dangerous environments, they can also sap our spiritual strength, dull our sense of adventure and kill our zest for life, wherever we find ourselves.

Being happy in life is not just about surviving (there are plenty of miserable octogenarians). Nor is it about having more stuff or an easier or more privileged existence (miserable millionaires). It means having a sense of purpose, a rugged and well-constructed belief system and personal goals. Being happy means living well and, often, vice versa.

At its most basic level, surviving in the wilderness is about not dying of stupidity. How much more rewarding it is to fully embrace the potential dangers of the wilderness and to survive well. I believe that’s what motivates the mountaineers, the climbers and the adventurers of this life: Those who value less the comforts of the material world and face potential annihilation to feel truly alive.

Those who survive well are often those who live well and, therefore, live happily: An argument perhaps for a life of adventure and considered risk.

Another thought provoking article. Thanks, again.

Kind regards

Matt

Wow Laurence, I never really thought of suicide as 'odds', those particular numbers are impressive.
