Trendwatch: Extreme Bathing

Extreme-bathingStarted out of necessity in the wilds of Alaska, extreme bathing has taken on a life of its own in particularly outdoorsy (and hygienic) communities across the nation, and even the world—there is a devoted Extreme Bathing Club in Saskatchewan, we hear. The goal, as stated by the Society of Extreme Bathers, is "to bathe in as precarious and picturesque a spot as possible." One Charles A. Wipple, of Valdez, took a bath atop the now exploded Mt. Redoubt only five weeks ago, no doubt solidifying his place among the handful of legendary Extreme Bathers. Mr. Wipple, we salute you.

Gear Review #2: Topo Toilet Paper

Topo-tp-500
This two-ply tissue promises to "go where other maps cannot," which is totally true, but only gets to the half of Topo TP's greatness. The real beauty is in the pre-use terrain study—on-site testing included a careful examination of Pariah Canyon and Yellowstone's backcountry. As for softness, it leaves something to be desired.

Gear Review #1: Backcountry Martini Kit—Lost in a Haze, But Not the Woods

Adventure-Drunk-500

Even though you may find yourself lost in a drunken haze, you needn't be lost in the woods. Stocked with orienteering tools, a rescue whistle, a fully functional GPS, and  everything you need to make the perfect martini, the Backcountry Martini Kit is the sophisticated hiker's best friend. Just because you're off the beaten path doesn't mean you have to live without life's little comforts.
