More useful tips:
-hitchhiking, or checking on the net if sb is going same direction with a car
-check out student campuses, if you ask you can get sth to eat or sleep for free
-go to church, priests always help

There are a number of spa-type resorts in California and Arizona offering inclusive packages lately that are unbelievable values. One of them is Miraval, but I've seen a number of offers lately for upscale places that offer adventure activities + spa + sitting by the pool. Something worth checking out.
